The Global Student Forum (GSF) commends the landmark recommendations put forward by the UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Panel on the Teaching Profession.

GSF applauds the recommendations of the UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Panel on the Teaching Profession

As a full member of the High Level Panel, the international student movement, represented through GSF Executive Director Sebastian Berger, played a pivotal role in shaping these recommendations and advocating for the interests of students in the follow up framework to the UNGA Transforming Education Summit.

Launched at the 14th Policy Dialogue Forum of the International Task Force on Teachers for Education 2030 (TTF), the recommendations outline a comprehensive roadmap for transforming the teaching profession to meet the evolving demands of education in the 21st century. The GSF believes that the outcome document marks a significant step towards fostering an educational environment that prioritizes the holistic development and well-being of students.

“Students are at the heart of the education system, and the quality of their learning experiences is deeply intertwined with the effectiveness of our teachers,” said Sebastian Berger, Executive Director of the Global Student Forum. ““We echo the Panel’s call for decent working conditions, competitive wages, opportunities for professional development, and meaningful engagement in decision-making processes for teachers and also applaud the UN Secretary General’s efforts to address the critical issues faced by the teaching profession”

The recommendations, informed by six core imperatives covering dignity, humanity, diversity, equity and inclusion, quality, innovation and leadership, and sustainability, emphasize the importance of valuing and respecting the teaching profession.

We recognize the pivotal role of technology in enhancing teaching and learning experiences, provided it is utilized in a manner that upholds the integrity of the teaching profession and ensures equitable access for all students. The emphasis on teacher autonomy in selecting appropriate technological tools resonates strongly with GSF’s vision for inclusive and learner-centered education.

As advocates for student rights and the wellbeing of learners, the GSF underscores the importance of collaboration between students, teachers, and policymakers in implementing these recommendations effectively. Only by fostering genuine partnerships and dialogue among all stakeholders, we can create an educational ecosystem that nurtures the talents, aspirations, and potential of every student.

Moving forward, GSF remains committed to working closely with governments, educational institutions, and civil society organizations to translate these recommendations into concrete actions that benefit students and teachers worldwide.

Together, we must build a more inclusive, equitable, and empowering education system that equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in an ever-changing world.
