The Global Student Forum (GSF) expresses grave concern over the recent detention of Ahoo Daryaei, a female student from Tehran’s Islamic Azad University, who engaged in a protest against the strict Islamic dress code enforced by Iran. This protest, documented by the Amir Kabir newsletter, has since been widely circulated and shared by reputable sources. Reports indicate that Ms. Daryaei was subjected to harassment by university-affiliated paramilitary members before bravely taking action in protest, which resulted in her violent arrest and detention.
Ms. Daryaei’s protest reflects the courage and determination of Iranian women who continue to resist policies that restrict their fundamental rights and autonomy. This incident highlights the deeply entrenched oppression Iranian women face daily, often risking their safety and freedom to express their dissatisfaction with these restrictive laws.
GSF calls for the immediate and unconditional release of Ms. Daryaei, whose alleged mistreatment in detention warrants urgent, independent, and impartial investigation. The student community worldwide stands in solidarity with Iranian women and students, who are demanding their rights to personal freedom, dignity, and safety. We further echo the calls by Amnesty International and the UN Special Rapporteur on Iran for Ms. Daryaei’s protection and access to legal representation.
This incident is yet another reminder that students and young people must not face violence or suppression when voicing their convictions. We urge Iran to uphold human rights standards and prioritise the safety and freedom of expression of its citizens, particularly students who should feel safe within their academic institutions.
As we continue to witness global struggles for autonomy and rights, GSF remains committed to advocating for the freedoms and protections of students and young people worldwide.
