Statement on the Death of Ikem
The Global Student Forum stands in solidarity with the National Association of Nigerian Students in Diaspora (NANS-D) in condemning the brutal killing of exchange student Chibuikem Emmanuel Chukwuemeka, among friends, Ikem. This act in the Republic of the Philippines serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities students and workers abroad often face.
The underlying factors that precipitated this crime cannot be ignored. Such incidents are not isolated, but a culmination of systemic failures rooted in exploitative business practices and disregard for the rule of law.
Specifically, the denial of Ikem’s fundamental right to fair remuneration. Every individual, irrespective of nationality or location, deserves to be compensated fairly for their labor. When such rights are breached, it amplifies the vulnerabilities foreign students face.
Furthermore, the alleged decision of the head of the company to deploy a gang to silence Ikem, in order to prevent him from rightfully claiming his due, signifies a gross violation of human rights and showcases an alarming level of impunity.
The circumstances leading up to Ikem’s death stress the need for international cooperation in ensuring that students and workers abroad are protected from exploitation and harm.
We echo the calls of NANS-D in urging the Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with the Philippine authorities, to ensure that the perpetrators of this crime are brought to justice. We further stress the importance of proactive engagement from the respective Ministries of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission.
We stand united in our call for justice and the protection of the rights and well-being of students everywhere.
